Why did we have to build this bench?

Better question: Why isn't the government building them?

Pittsburgh Regional Transit is responsible for building, maintaining, and upgrading bus stops in the Pittsburgh region. However, due to recent budget shortfalls PRT is unable to afford to install basic stop infrastructure like benches and shelters.

This is bigger than benches.

PRT is using $100M in capital funds to cover operating costs. This means PRT has less money to maintain their busses, fix damaged shelters, and replace outdated signs. If they don't get more funding soon, they'll have to cut back on bus routes.

So what can we do?
