About TWE

Welcome! We are a casual wind and percussion ensemble, seeking to bring students and other affiliates of CMU together to rehearse and perform music. We require no auditions and welcome all skill levels.

Critical Info

Rehearsals

We host rehearsals twice a week, on Wednesdays from 5:30 - 7:30 PM, and on Sundays from 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM. These are in the CUC Studio Theater, save for specific exceptions, which are announced in advance.

Performances

We perform one formal concert each semester. These will be hosted on a Sunday, during normal rehearsal time, with exact dates announced as they're set. We also typically perform at the ScottyCon anime convention!

Communication

All critical information, i.e. rehearsal scheduling, is sent out via our TartanConnect mailing list. Once you attend a rehearsal, we bring you in to our Discord server, where members chat and can ask questions more readily.

Why TWE?

  • We are an all-year-round concert ensemble, for a calm group
  • No auditions, we are happy to have you at your musical level
  • Our vibes are as relaxed as our membership restrictions, come to have a good time!
  • We are proudly student run, and being part of the band's operation (music selection, rehearsal structure, eventual officership) is accessible to all interested members!
  • We play both lovely concert pieces and fun pop culture arrangements!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to attend every rehearsal?

Not necessarily! Many of our members work around partial scheduling conflicts with our rehearsals. Ask our officers team, and we will get you sorted.

How much music do we play? What kind?

Each semester, we select 5-7 songs to learn. These are typically classical. In the spring, we incorporate arrangements of video game, anime, or other pop-culture music, which we play alone at Scottycon and alongside some classical pieces at our spring concert.

How do I play in the concert?

As long as you attend around 50% of rehearsals, negotiated with officers case-by-case, you are eligible for our concerts! These have a concert black dress code, but are otherwise not very different from playing during rehearsal. A concert commitment form will be circulated later in each semester.

How do I play a wind instrument for TWE?

If you have your own instrument, then simply walk in and join us! Or let us know, as to prepare your music ahead of time. If you don't own your own instrument, we have a small library of instruments, expanding each year, that we loan to active members on a first-request, first-serve basis. We own a trumpet, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, and euphonium; please ask about their availability.

How do I play percussion for TWE?

Just walk in! We provide all relevant percussion instruments, i.e. standing bass drum, xylophone, snare, cymbals, triangle, and more. We are very fluid with arrangement, and will incorporate parts and percussion instruments as our membership allows.
