Hi everyone! 👋

Welcome our new Girls Who Code @ CMU Newsletter! We’re so excited to share updates about our programs, upcoming events, and ways for you to get involved in our growing community. Whether you’re here to learn, connect, or just have fun, there’s something for everyone this semester.

Our Mission

At Girls Who Code, we’re on a mission to close the gender gap in technology and redefine what it means to be a programmer. We aim to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of women in tech by fostering skills, confidence, and a sense of community.

What We Do

Here’s how we’re shaping the future of tech:

Teach Coding Skills: We introduce programming fundamentals with Python.
Develop Essential Skills: Students learn project management and presentation techniques.
Explore STEM Careers: We connect students with opportunities and role models in the tech industry.
Build Community: We create a welcoming space to make friends, collaborate, and grow together.

Our Journey So Far

We’re proud of the courses we’ve offered to inspire young learners:

Spring 2022: Online pilot course.
Fall 2022: In-person coding basics.
Spring 2023: Advanced in-person programming.
Fall 2023: Beginner-friendly in-person classes.
Fall 2024: 6-week Python programming camp
Spring 2024: Upcoming 3-hour beginner programming workshop

Thanksgiving Social

🍁 Join us for our Thanksgiving Social! 🍁
Take a break before finals and enjoy an evening of fun, food, and community.

📍 Where: Hamburg Hall 1005
⏰ Time: 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM

Six-Week Intro to Python Program & Plans for Next Semester

This semester, we’ve been hosting a 6-Week Intro to Python Course for middle school girls!

📅 Class Schedule

When: Weekly on Wednesdays, 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM
Dates: October 23rd - December 4th

Our program empowers young coders to take their first steps into programming through hands-on lessons and fun activities!

Get Involved!!!

We’re looking for passionate members to join our committees and help make this program a success:

Activities Committee

Create engaging content for the Intro to Python course.
Revise and improve existing slides for dynamic, interactive lessons.

Outreach Committee

Connect with local middle schools to spread the word about our program.
Manage our social media presence and onboard new students.

Teacher

Lead class lessons and bring Python to life for students.
Review and refine materials prepared by the Activities Committee.

Teacher Assistant

Help with student drop-off and pick-up.
Support students during exercises and guide them through activities.

Looking Ahead to Next Semester

We’re already planning for next semester's program! Our goal is to expand the program and include more coding workshops for young learners. Stay tuned for updates and ways to get involved in our next round of activities!

Hashfire, a cutting-edge blockchain-based document security company, is looking for passionate and motivated interns! If you’re interested in blockchain technology and eager to work on a real-world project, this could be for you.

About Hashfire:
Hashfire is transforming contract verification by securing documents at a cryptographic level. With innovative partnerships and enterprise-grade APIs, they are pioneering a new era of trust and transparency.

Responsibilities:

Build and optimize front-end (Next.js, Tailwind CSS) and back-end (Solidity smart contracts).
Drive feature development and key business operations.
Conduct market research, analyze trends, and support strategic partnerships.
