CMU Delegation attends the Northeast Greek Leadership Association Conference

The Northeast Greek Leadership Association (NGLA) Annual Conference was held in Pittsburgh on February 23 - 26. NGLA aims to educate leaders from a variety of fraternal experiences to transform and empower their community and align actions with values. CMU sent a delegation of 13 students to attend the conference to gain leadership skills, engage in conversation surrounding DEI, and network with other students and professionals in the broader Fraternity and Sorority Life community. 

Here is what some students had to say about the experience:

• “I learned about dealing with apathy in a chapter and how to not burnout with it as a leader.”
• “I learned a lot about better recruitment tactics, how to engage with unaffiliated men.”
• “Truly connecting (aka being friends) with your members can enhance and strengthen community and sisterhood vibes.”
• “I learned about leading by example, I have to act first for others to follow.”
• “Connecting with fellow chapter leaders and other FSL leaders gives us the chance to brainstorm and work through ideas and give each other ideas. I have so many amazing ideas to bring back from what other schools have done.”
• “I learned about creating more equitable standards to be a better leader and hold people accountable.”

Order of Omega Case Study Competition

Additionally at NGLA, Monica Paz Parra, a junior and Chapter President of Kappa Alpha Theta, and Taylor Ritzert, Coordinator of SLICE, (pictured on the far left) participated as a team in the Order of Omega Case Study Competition in the Student/Staff track. The pair received a case study surrounding incidents alleging sexual misconduct by two fraternities that were anonymously posted to social media. Monica and Taylor had less than 24 hours to compose a 15-minute presentation including an analysis of the issues, a response to the incident, and considerations from various university staff and stakeholders. Monica and Taylor received first place in the case study competition for their work.

Order of Omega is a national honor society for members of Greek organizations recognizing juniors and seniors who have exemplified high standards of leadership. 

Delta Gamma Chapter featured in their national magazine

The Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Gamma was recently featured in the Anchora, Delta Gamma's national magazine, for their participation in Buggy. The members describe their passion, perseverance, and belonging through buggy.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon trains in CPR

On Sunday, February 3, brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Pennsylvania Phi gathered to learn important CPR training from CMU EMS. Their brothers are equipped with crucial life-saving skills in the event of an emergency in an attempt to safeguard the health of students on campus. The chapter thoroughly enjoyed this training.

Becoming an Iron Phi

Congrats to Michael Sun of Pennsylvania Rho (@phideltcmu) for surpassing $1,000 raised. He has raised $1,240 and will become an Iron Phi after a 16-mile run to the Pittsburgh Foundation (where Live Like Lou (@livelikelou4) got its start!) from the Phi Delt PA Rho house twice on March 1.
The Live Like Lou Foundation aims to create and connect communities to stimulate emerging ALS research and uniquely support families affected by Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Fraternity and Sorority Community participates in Rise Against Hunger

Thank you to our many fraternity and sorority life volunteers who helped at Rise Against Hunger. There were over 350 CMU community members who helped pack over 87,000 meals in Wiegand Gymnasium. Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief non-profit organization that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food and other aid to people in developing nations. What a great opportunity for the FSL community to live out their values of service to others. 

Sigma Phi Epsilon Exceeds Recruitment Goals

The Pennsylvania Theta chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon was highlighted for exceeding their initial spring recruitment goals, and they are still bringing in new men to SigEp. Click here to view the post on Instagram!

Sigma Phi Epsilon Advisor Wins Volunteer of the Year

Jake Muskovitz was awarded Volunteer of the Year within District 7 for Sigma Phi Epsilon. Jake serves as the chapter advisor for the Pennsylvania Theta Chapter of SigEp at Carnegie Mellon University. He was the Assistant Chairman for the Buggy Alumni Association. Sigma Phi Epsilon District 7 hosted their New Member Summit on February 25 at Carnegie Mellon University with new members from CMU as well as across the region: Penn State, Pitt, Davis & Elkins, Westminster, Thiel, and Penn West-Clarion.

It's time for the Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards!
The Fraternity and Sorority Life Awards recognize the hard work, achievements, and excellence within the FSL community throughout 2022.

There are categories for both individual members and chapters within our community. Please complete this nomination form with the name of your nomination and include a brief description of why the individual or chapter(s) should be awarded. The descriptions submitted will be a factor in determining the award recipient. Anyone can complete the nomination form on behalf of themselves or others within the community. You can complete the form in its entirety or select a few specific categories to submit nominations for. The form is due March 12 at 11:59 pm.

Save the Date: The FSL Awards reception is planned for April 26 in Simmons B from 5pm - 7pm.

Sign up to participate in Pittsburgh Alternative Break! The theme this year is "Development Without Displacement" and will focus on the neighborhood of Hazelwood. Check out highlights from last year's program to learn more! 

Apply to become a Pre-College RA or CA

Make a difference in the lives of high school students by applying for the CA or RA positions with CMU's Pre-College Programs. Our residential staff will consist of a diverse group of CMU undergraduate students willing and able to care for the safety and well-being of high school students. Problem-solving, communication, and people skills will be applied to daily duties. As a member of the Pre-College residential staff, you will gain valuable experiences by mentoring high school students. With your supervision and leadership, you will leave the program with a network of peers and staff. Pre-College RAs and CAs receive a financial stipend with room and board, ongoing training, professional development, and time off.

Dates of employment are June 18 to August 13.
