LABC Meet & Greet Breakfast with Tepper Alum and Former LABC President Juan Pablo Rubiano-Groot
Details
Jp is originally from Bogota, Colombia - which is surprising given he only started drinking coffee like 3 years ago. Jp liked school so much he went back three times - for an undergrad in industrial engineering, and for masters in applied math and in business (Go Tepper!).
Jp started his career staring at 4 screens for hours - in a sales & trading desk. He led and grew BBVA’s derivatives desk until one fateful day his manager told him he actually needed to make money - so he decided it was time to leave to get an MBA and learn how to get those dineros!
During his time in Tepper, Jp did concentrations in almost everything he could to avoid making a decision about his future - so not surprisingly ended up doing consulting for his summer and full time. He also led the Latin American Business Club (hosting a still famous trek to Brazil during carnival), and received the Elliott Dunlap Smith Award.
After Tepper, Jp spent a few fun filled years traveling and consulting with McKinsey & Co, after which he joined Google's Product Strategy & Ops (PS&O) group, or as many refer to it, Google’s Recovering Consultant Program. Jp has held Strategy & Operations roles in the Ads Sales Org (product strategy & sales enablement), in Google Maps (chief of staff), and more recently in Google Commerce - the product area at Google working to make Google the best place for users to start their shopping journeys - where he brings his former consultant craft to make the org work faster, better, and build more slides.
Jp is an avid tennis player who still gets beaten by his dad every holiday break. He holds a cooking degree from a renowned academy in Bogota, that during his Tepper days got more attention than all his schooling & professional experience combined. After 10 years in the Bay Area, he recently moved to New York, where he lives with his partner (Rafaela) and his 4 month old puppy (Carmen).
