Mission
The purpose of the African Graduate Student Association is to provide a supportive and welcoming
environment for graduate students of African descent at Carnegie Mellon University. Through
social, cultural, and professional development events throughout the academic year, we aim to
enable our members to become advocates on issues pertaining to development in Africa. Our hope
is to engage with the CMU community through our events to create awareness of the cultural and
socio-economic riches of the African Continent.

Chapters are formed to advance the mission of American Indigenous Science and Engineering Society (AISES) at colleges and universities with Indigenous students in attendance and/or official support services for these students. The objective is to support the success of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students in their intellectual, academic, social, and professional pursuits in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and related disciplines.

Awareness of Roots in Chinese Culture (ARCC) is a CMU organisation which serves to promote Chinese culture on campus. Our goal is to increase awareness of Chinese culture on the CMU campus by sponsoring large open events, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, Chinese New Year and Dumpling Nights, along with organizing annual cultural performances involving traditional dance, martial arts, and musical performances.

The Bangladeshi Student Organization (BSO) at Carnegie Mellon University aims to provide a home for students and faculty of Bengali descent. providing students with an outlet for artistic expression, cultural identity, and thought. Big
Straw was founded with the goal to cultivate and spread ideas relevant to Asians and Asian
Americans.

CMU GMB is a chapter of the national organization Global Brigades. Global Brigades is a global health and sustainable development organization that aims to empower rural communities in Guatemala, Panama, Honduras, and Ghana through student brigades. CMU GMB's mission is to aid in this initiative by providing access to medical care and creating sustainable infrastructures in underserved communities abroad. Our organization focuses on holistic health care development of the rural areas we visit. For half of our brigade, we facilitate free mobile clinics. With a team of recruited students and licensed medical professionals, we provide basic and essential health care to underserved communities. A large aspect of clinics also targets long-term health problems by hosting educational talks about dietary health and water sanitation. Educational talks about dental hygiene are also held with the children that visit the clinic. The other half of our brigade consists of public health related projects that include educational presentations and infrastructural projects like laying concrete floors and building sanitation stations. Global Brigades also offers Telebrigades, where we meet with local health care workers to learn about the country's healthcare system and gain virtual shadowing experience. We also believe that leaving an impact in our local community should be just as much part of our mission as our global community. Therefore we will be taking further steps to increase our impact in our local community. Our organization believes that a multifaceted approach that targets health problems with immediate and long term relief can help these communities reach a better standard of living.

Chinese Student Association's primary mission is to provide Chinese undergraduate students with a homely community and help them adjust to life here at Carnegie Mellon University. CSA also promotes Chinese culture and maintains open social platforms for all students. CSA's activities include but are not limited to providing incoming Chinese students with orientation information; hosting internal and external events within the CMU community; hosting events to celebrate traditional Chinese holidays & festivals; providing its members with professional help; and creating social opportunities to facilitate interactions between members and the campus community.

The mission of CSSA is bring everyone together by holding external and internal events that create opportunities for Chinese students and scholars as well as students from other country to meet each other and establish mutual-beneficial relationships. Our organization aims to provide a second home for international students from China and familiarize Chinese students with CMU as well as the Pittsburgh community. We are dedicating at being supportive and inclusive for all students, from undergraduates, doctoral students to visiting scholars at Carnegie Mellon University and people in our community. We also hope to show the beauty of Chinese traditional culture to the rest of CMU community through our events. For new students, we help them to adapt to the new social and academic environment via a series of orientation events. For old students, we assist them to keep connected to the community and find new encounters by organizing a variety of social and cultural events. In general, by participating in our activities that facilitate cultural adaptation and help bridge the cultural gap, Chinese students will blend into the community better. In addition, members of CSSA will improve their communication skills, build up problem-solving abilities, obtain supportive peer groups, and make lifelong friends through involvement in event design, planning, and implementation.

CMU Jiya is Carnegie Mellon's premier award-winning all-girls competitive Bollywood fusion team, combining a variety of different dance styles from western styles like hip-hop and contemporary, to Indian classical and fold dances. Our dancers aim to exhibit our passion for dance and showcase their love for Indian culture. The troupe's members excel at a variety of dance styles and many have been dancing since childhood, but some have just begun dancing as recently as when they joined Jiya. The team participates in many on-campus and off-campus performances throughout the year, as well as competitions in the national collegiate circuit. We placed 2nd at Steel City Sapna with our 2020-2021 set!

The purpose of CMU FEMME (Feminists Engaged in Multicultural Matters and Education) is to educate the campus community on societal marginalization using an intersectional feminist lens to provide focus. The organization accomplishes its mission by providing educational programming, events, discussions, and entertainment relating to various intersectional issues, as well as fostering a safe space for all community members.
FEMME is also the proud founder and member of the CMU Gender Equity Coalition. This is a new coalition of CMU student organizations that are interested in and committed to feminism, gender equity, and intersectional advocacy.
